
Rachel Keller is a fictional character in The Ring film series. The character was developed by writer-producer Ehren Kruger and portrayed by Naomi Watts, serves as the protagonist of The Ring and The Ring Two, sharing similarities with Reiko Asakawa from the earlier Japanese films.Introduced in 2002's film, Rachel is an investigative journalist who has to find a way to escape the death penalty after viewing a video that was cursed that she discovered during her investigation into the death of her niece. Rachel has to look into the past of Samara Morgan who is her son, in The Ring Two. Ruth Rachel's sister is adamant Rachel to investigate the enigmatic circumstances that led to Katie's sudden death. Rachel is told by her sister Ruth that she discovered Katie's deformed body in the closet. Rachel also reveals that Katie passed away from an attack on her heart. Katie's friends tell Rachel about the legend of the tape with the curse and the story of how Katie's friend Becca was put in an institution after Katie's tragic death. Katie's boyfriend, along with two of her best friendsalso died due to strange accidents that occurred that same night around 10:30 pm. Rachel goes to Shelter Mountain Inn and stays in Cabin 12, the identical cabin that Katie and her friends saw the videotape they believed was cursed. Rachel finds the mysterious tape and watches it, after which the phone rings. Rachel hears a voice utter "seven days". Rachel is referred to Noah Clay as a video analyst by her ex-boyfriend. Rachel later discovers that Aidan (her son who is with Noah) looked at the tape, and told her that he believed what she said. Rachel goes through the tape in search of the lighthouse and discovers it is on Moesko Island. This was the home of Anna Morgan, an evil horse breeder cursed to appear on the tape with the cursed name. Rachel finds out that Anna was the mother of an adoptive daughter, Samara. Samara was capable of creating terrifying images within the minds of humans, animals, and objects. Rachel encounters Anna's widower Richard, but he makes her leave after she starts to ask questions about Samara.
